Acne (pimples & blackheads)

What is acne?

Acne is a common skin condition, usually beginning at puberty due to hormonal changes which can cause an increase in oil (sebum) production.

Acne sufferers tend to have larger sebaceous glands and produce more sebum than people with unaffected skin. Hair follicles can become blocked, providing an ideal environment for bacteria to grow and causing the skin to become irritated and inflamed.

What can you do about acne?

Avoid picking or squeezing acne, as this can rupture the pimple and may lead to scarring. Use products that have been specially designed for acne-prone skin. If you wear make-up, apply it sparingly and remove all traces of it before going to bed.

Stress commonly aggravates acne so actions should be taken to minimise the factors causing the stress. Maintain a healthy, well-balanced diet rich in wholegrain breads and pastas, fresh fruit and vegetables, and make sure you get some exercise, drink plenty of water and get enough sleep.
